The Lubav family is one of those families that has... The Lubav family is an example of a family that has... The Lubav family is an example of those families that (have)...

  • The Lubav family is one of those families that has...
  • The Lubav family is an example of a family that has...
  • The Lubav family is an example of those families that (have)...
  • I find the third least preferable due to the switch from singular to plural, but it's used.
  • "is an example of one of those families" isn't right since you can't have an example taken from just one item (an example of " one of those families").

Isn't it strange how illogical it seems, and yet fraze.it gives more than 71 examples of it? It doesn't sound that unusual to me until I examine the logic in greater detail.

It may be perhaps because it can be used in other ways, such as
He made an example of one of those families
I'm still not sure if logic wins or not... I guess it must get written a lot though, like Fish and Chip's.

I suppose the logic does in fact work.
We might say,
"This is an example of a bird that cannot fly"
"a bird" is singular and means "one of the birds that cannot fly", but is used to represent a plural group.
So replacing "a bird" with that we then have -
"This is an example of one of the birds that cannot fly"
The example sounds a bit ugly, but it's just to expose the use o
