One of the books is/are missing.

One of the people is/are here.

One of the plants I bought is/are dead.

I am one of those people who like/likes reading.

One of the books is missing.-- One missing book

One of the people is here.-- One person present

One of the plants I bought is dead.- One dead plant

I am one of those people who like reading.-- Those people like reading

Please re-read my previous post carefully. There is no difference if you use these, those or the.

But actually I think likes is correct, because again the subject noun is oneEmotion: smile ... same as in the other sentences .....

No. You are mistaken, Jandros. That case is a relative clause with 'who' as the subject, which refers to plural 'people', not singular 'I'. The other examples are of simple predications.

Hmmm, I've come across this situation before, and I was thinking it's the same as in this sentence ...

One of the plants I bought is/are dead.

... because we could also say "One of the plants thatI bought ..." but it's not really the same, because singular "I" is the subject here. So I'll defer to your apparent analytical advantage. Apologies for my mistake

You can also say
One of the plants that I bought is dead now. (When you bought it, it was alive, but it died.)

That happens a lot to the plants that I buy. I don't have a green thumb.
