one might have hoped/hope

Hi everyone,
Which of the two following options do you prefer,

the reports are not as glowing as one might have hoped

OR

the reports are not as glowing as one might hope

to my ears, they sort of both seem OK...

Any clarity on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Both are OK, but I mostly hear, and prefer, #1. Perhaps the underlying idea is that hope died at the point in the past when you found out about the reports. Clive
