One is or One are?

Hi! I'm writing a paper for school, and am a little unclear if my subject/verb agreement is right in the following sentence.

'One of the most common types of vegeterians is lacto vegeterians. '

at first I was using 'are', but then I looked at it without the prepositional phrases 'of the most common types' and ' of vegeterians' and just mentally read it as 'One are lacto vegeterians', but I thought that sounded wrong, so I used 'is' instead. 'One is lacto vegeterians'. I'm just wondering if this is correct?

'Is' is grammatically correct, but you have set up a notional dilemma, and it would be cleaner to recast (and notice the spelling of 'vegetarian'): One of the most common types of vegetarian is the lacto-vegetarian. However, I don't think that there are more than 3 or 4 kinds of vegetarians altogether, so I find 'one of the most common' rather unbelievable. Lacto-vegetarians are either the most common or they are not.
