Hey, how is going everybody!
Could anybody tell me the meaning of one-half?Does it mean half of or half and one of a certain number. Here is the context:
"These demographic features have reduced Ireland's population by one-half during the past 100 years"

Could I just replace one-half with "half" which also means 50%?
