One grain and one meat source

Of course, spices also add flavor and variety when only a few types of food are available. One grain and one meat source can make a range of uniquely delicious dishes when a mixture of different spices is used.

Hi,

Is it right to interpret the bolded part in the above as "With only one kind of grain and meat, we can make many uniquely delicious dishes when we use a combination of different spices?" Thanks.

That's how I understand it. Let's say you have only chicken and only rice. With different seasonings, you can make many different dishes.

With only one kind of grain and (one kind of) meat, we can make many uniquely delicious dishes when we use a combination of different spices.

'when we use a combination of different spices' is indeed a correct paraphrase of 'when a mixture of different spices is used', but that aside, I believe the intent of the original was 'when we use different combinations (drawn from the same range)
