"one gets talking"

I have this line from a book by Wells....

A: How long do you like your eggs boiled?
B: Four minutes exactly.
A: One gets talking.
B: one does.

I can guess, but can't say exactly what it means "one gets talking". Thank you for your help.

Anonymous One gets talking. People begin to have a conversation and continue to converse. I don't know the full context, but that observation appears to be alluding to the idea that when having a conversation, people lose track of time, so they may forget that the eggs are boiling and miss the four-minute mark.

  • So if I'm right, it means (in this context) that once you start talking you forget what else you're supposed to be doing, and you may end up spoiling the eggs.

It was so late to say 'thank you' and so sory about that.

You're exactly right I think. Their chat in the context became longer and longer, which resulted in spoiling some of eggs.
