One Direction are to go their separate ways

At 1:53 of the video below,
Newscaster: One Direction are to go their separate ways in several different directions. ________________.
Talk show host: How cute!

(If this is not a correct transcription, please let me know.)

Two questions.

(1) Is it okay to say "One Direction" (a band comprising four members) "are to go their separate ways" instead of "is to go their separate ways"? Are both possible?

(2) What did the newscaster say in the blank? He sort of mumbled so I couldn't understand what he was saying.

Yes, you probably should, because 'different directions' makes it clear that the speaker is referring to the several members of the band. listenever Are both possible?

  • Yes.
  • Notice that native speakers don't really care; we blithely mix-and-match, as does Jimmy Kimmel at 0:05: One Direction, the band, is taking a break to focus on their solo projects .

Mister MicawberNo idea; it is covered by other sound. I'm not even sure that 'How cute!' is right.
Thanks, Mister Micawber!

I'm sure it's 'How cute!' but now that you say so I'd like someone else to confirm this.

Also, I can hear "...for a year" in the blank, but no idea what comes before. I'd like anyone to help me out with either of these.
