One and Only One Popcorn

Is it okay to just write "a popcorn," or does it have to be "a kernel of popcorn" for one singular piece of popcorn? For example: He popped a popcorn in his mouth.

Thanks.

Actually, that sounds good enough to me, but to be sure, I would say 'He popped a popcorn kernel in his mouth.'
