Hi, In my opinion, "once" implies that you're expecting, or waiting for the event, although you may have no idea when it will occur. This may also be true of "as soon as," but quite often the event happens unexpectedly. I believe that in your two examples, the event comes as a complete surprise, and that "once" would not be appropriate.
