Once vs in case

Much of the immune system's machinery is geared towards killing or eliminating invading microbes ---- they have been recognized.

A) once
B) in case

KPDS, a nationwide exam in Turkey, was delivered on 5 December, 2010. One of the 'controversial' questions of the exam is above. The official correct answer is A) once, but some people think B is as correct, especially in American English. Does it take an immunologist to get this correct? What is your opinion?

Would 'if' be correct in this sentence?

Sentence # 2: The immune system may sometimes fail to recognize invading microbes. It can only attack them in case they have been recognized.

Hi,
My suggestion is that you focus first on learning the meaning of 'in case'.

Consider this simple scenario.
I'm the leader of a gang of robbers. One of my gang is called Tom.
