Once Byzantium had fallen, the Ottomans completed their conquest of the Balkans with ease.

What does "once" mean here? 

After, before, by the time or similar ones?

As already mentioned "as soon as". Also "immediately after" or "soon after". In some narrative styles, even "now that" will work.
