Once

Could you tell me what a word class of "once" in the sentence below.

I first thought it was adverb meaning "in previous times"
...but acverb can qualify a nominal phrase(the common language across most of the Communist world)??

1) Once the common language across most of the Communist world, Russian has been sidelined, especially in Eastern Europe, where English has replaced it as the favored second language.

H M I first thought it was adverb meaning "in previous times" It is. Here's the "translation": Although in previous times it (Russian) was the common language across most of the Communist world, Russian has been sidelined, .... You have to supply some of the words yourself if you want to make sense of it.
