We say "We do work at the kitchen table." or "We work at the kitchen table."to refer to the location where we work.Is it all right to say "We do work/work on the kitchen table." when we mean the work to be done is located on the table? Thanks!

Thanks! Both words work but in different ways. You might make bread at the kitchen table, meaning you measure and mix it there, but you would roll it out on the kitchen table.

  • The difference is pretty much the same as any other use of the two words.
  • You stand at the curb waiting for a bus, which means you wait standing close to the road, but if you actually stand on the curb, you stand on the curb waiting for a bus.

Working on the kitchen table can also mean that you are repairing the table in some way, or painting or varnishing it, for example.

With the same meaning:

to work on your car; to work on your house; to work on your biceps,

and even to work on a degree at a university or for a lawyer to work on a case.
