On/at

Hello,
Do we say, in British English, "Call me at/on this number"?

I think the Americans always say "on". I would think the British would always say "at", but just wanted to clarify.

Is it always "at" with numbers?

Thanks,
Prasanna

I do hear both, although I think on is more common. I mainly hear at for business purposes where there are extensions or many people sharing a number. I seldon hear it for personal numbers.

As a native, American English speaker, I can say that I've never heard "call me on this number", but always "call me at".

We would say "Call me at 555-7868."

If it is a thing, however, we'd say on. For example, "Call me on my cell, ok?" or "Call me on the business line, please."

I hope this helps.

Hi Dave

Are you sure you got that the right way round? I use on as a Brit. A Canadian and an American both say they say at.

You're right. It should be the other way round. Thanks for being so alert. I must have been dreaming.

"Call me at this number" is correct. "At" is usually used when talking about specific phone numbers. However, if you wanted to say "Call me my cellular phone", "on" would be used.

I spent my early life in the UK, but moved to Canada in my twenties. I don't recall ever using "Call me on 123 456 789". I remember many other English expressions, but not that one. I often wonder if it changed at some time but the new way has become so familiar that everyone has forgotten that it did change.
