on what basis

Hi, teachers!

I need your help with the following, please.

A (to B): She said that you have lost you mind.

B (to A): What? But why did she say that? (Can "B" also say "on what basis did she say that?" if he wishes to show 'surprise' and wants to know the reason why she said that for him?)

Thank you.

Yes, I would say that the "on what basis" version is also ok. However it sounds a lot more formal/academic, and looks a bit out of place in the conversation you've given us. Even though the text you've given us is very short, it still seems like a very casual/intimate conversation.
