On the weekend

I have a question about the days of the week. "What did you do this weekend?"
If today is Thursday, does "this weekend" refer to the weekend five days ago? Can we ask the same question using "last weekend?"
but often I see people use "this weekend" to refer to the coming weekend in the question "What are you doing this weekend?"
The phrase "on the weekend" is a difficulty for me. Can it be used in present simple tense as in "What do you do on the weekend?" It means every weekend?
or in past simple tense as in "What did you do on the weekend?" the most recent past weekend?
or in future simple tense as in "What will you do on the weekend?" the coming weekend?
What does "on weekends" mean?
I would appreciate your help.

Americans tend to say 'on the weekend' where Brits tend to say 'at the weekend'. 'This weekend' refers to the nearest weekend, especially if it is Monday or Tuesday. ' 'What do you do on the weekend', because it is in simple present tense, would refer to every weekend without reference to time-- but the wise speaker would use 'weekends' to make the point clearer.

'This weekend' refers to the nearest weekend, especially if it is Monday or Tuesday. It can get confusing even among native speakers on Wednesday or Thursday, so that the listener will often require clarification, and respond with 'do you mean last weekend or the coming weekend?'
