ON THE WEEK

From a newscast:

"Despite the gains on the final day of trade, U.S. stocks were still down 1.5 percent on the week."

Shouldn't "on the week" be "in the week" or "during the week"? How is "on the week" different from "in/during the week"?

'on the week' is stock-market lingo. Outside the world of finance you are more likely to hear "down 1.5% for the week".
