The apples are growing on the tree.

The birds are singing in the tree.

I would like to know why 'on' is used in the first sentence and 'in' in the second sentence. One of my friends asked me this question, but I don't know how to explain to him.

The apples are growing on the tree. The apples are attached to the tree, part of the tree, but the birds are not. Compare things like 'I have a pimple on my face'.
