On (the) television

on the telephone
on the radio
on the Internet/ Web
on the walkie-talkie
on the intercom
on television
on Skype
on Youtube

I think that these are all similar in meaning, but why do you say 'on television' instead of 'on the television'? I consulted a couple of dictionaries and found out that we can also say 'on the television,' but I don't hear it so often. I think I understand the reason for 'on Skype' and 'on Youtube.' It's because they are trademarks, isn't it?
