on the street vs in the street

Is there a specific rule of when to use 'in the street' and when 'on the street'?

I have always used in the street when saying ' I am in the street' or ' I met him in the street' and on the street when saying ' I am on the street near the phonebox' but it is more intuitive rather than conscious choice. I can't find the answer in any of the books I have

First you have to decide whether you're operating in British English or American English, because the usage differs according to which variety you're using. In AmE, for almost all uses, if you are somewhere where you are in danger of being struck by a passing car, you are in the street. If you're safe on the sidewalk, you are on the street.
