-From the Sierra Nevada to Nebraska, and from the Yellowstone River in the north to the Colorado upon the south, is a region of desolation and silence.

The red words are things of the same type, and so should NORTH and SOUTH be. What so mysterious a thing is it that drives the writer to display his variation of preposition even when referring to similar things?
