Vocabulary

on the instigation of some form of basic stimulus

1. Does the highlighted section mean:

"based on more basic stimuli like his own walking personality or that of other specified individuals or groups that play the role of an instruction in some way"?

2. Does "observation" here mean "thinking about" or "watching"? And how do you understand which meaning is OK here?

Context:
The second artist is the Mexico City-based Francis Alys, whose work is similarly driven by street activity and performance but from the point of view of ‘engineered actions’ generally documented and presented filmically. Thus, his work records incursions into the cityscape, based occasionally on the observation of existing patterns of behaviour – the particular movement of pedestrians over time, for instance – but more usually on the instigation of some form of basic stimulus involving his own walking persona, or that of other specified individuals or groups, enacting a brief of some sort.

Here's a version in easier-to-understand English: The 2nd artist is Mexican, Francis Alys, whose work, like X's, is also driven by "street activity and performance," but here the actions are more systematic and structured. Alys' work presents incursions into the cityscape, based sometimes on his observations of existing patterns of behavior (without his participation in the action) - for example, the observation of particular movements of pedestrians over time - but more often, on the instigation of some form of stimulus, provided by Alys himself as he walks through the city, or by other specific individuals or groups, which creates a performance of some sort.

Thank you. And does "which creates a performance of some sort" refer to "Alys' work" or "the instigation of some form of stimulus..." ? And what is your answer to my second question above?
