Would you tell me the meaning of "on the fly" in the sentnece below?

"RMAN writes data through the interface, and LiteSpeed® Engine for Oracle compresses and/or encrypts the data on the fly. "

I would take it to mean "without any need to interrupt the natural flow of data."
It doesn't require a separate stage, or operation (timewise).

It's a common expression. You do what you need to do while the thing you're doing it to is in motion.
