On the desk were there a lot of books and magazines.

There were a lot of books and magazines on the desk.
-> On the desk were there a lot of books and magazines.

When inversion happens in the sentence, the latter one is correct?

I think that There is/ are sentences is already inverted and then there is no reason to invert, isn't it?

What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual in advance!

Thank you, so this sentence On the desk were there a lot of books and magazines. is never possible, right?

Thank you so much!

It's possible, but only as a question.

Thank you so much and someone insists that there should be a comma like On the desk, there were a lot of books and magazines and if there is no comma, it should be "On the desk were there a lot of books and magazines."

Do you agree with this?
