On the clock

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. The article is about door-to-door salesmen who drink and smoke marijuana on the job (before they knock on doors of course). So he's saying "The men are on the clock and in a company van, headed to neighborhoods just like yours."

What does "on the clock" mean here? I thought maybe it meant something like their time schedule is tight, but I'm not sure... Googled it; no luck. I'd be very grateful if anyone shed any light on this.

Thanks a million!
