On the ceiling or in the ceiling?

Hi, on the ceiling = on the bottom surface of the ceiling, eg a fly flew up and landed on the ceiling. in the ceiling = inside the ceiling or on the upper surface of the ceiling, eg I can hear a mouse inside the ceiling. Clive

on the ceiling = on the bottom surface of the ceiling, eg a fly flew up and landed on the ceiling.
