On standby

Hi,

I was trying to find a synonym for ‘on standby’, but I drew a blank on it.

I was watching a TV show where a doctor was explaining something to a patient and said that taking medication that would suppress her periods to avoid the pain caused by endometriosis would leave her ovaries on standby. I don’t want to get into the details if that’s okay.

Can you think of anything that could be used to replace ‘on standby’?

I came up with ‘in a state of hybernation’. It’s probably nonsense though.

Thank you.

I can't think of a word or phrase that adequately replaces on standby in normal use. In this particular context I would think in stasis might work, and would be a slightly better fit than in hibernation , but it wouldn't work for other uses of on standby .
