on probation

Hi,

I need your help with the expression "on probation" (when applied to a new employee, not a criminal :-)

Here is what my Longman reads:

Sub-entry#2: a period of time, during which an employer can see if a new worker is suitable:
(a) a three month probation period
(b) Some people are appointed on probation.

Sub-entry#3 (American English) : a period of time in which you must improve your work or behave well so that you will not have to leave your job:

I'm afraid I have no choice but to put you on probation.

Now, to my question.

Yes, they did give me a job but put on a two month probation period though.

Is this gramatically okay? and makes sense to both BrEng and AmEng speakers too?

thank you!

MUSCOVITE Yes, they did give me a job but put on a two month probation period though. , closer to the "criminal" definition. I'm not sure how I would express #1 (mostly AmE with Australian and Canadian complications) aside from how I did in the first two qualifier examples.

  • On a separate note, it would sound more natural to me if you got "the" job rather than "a" job (as long as the person you tell already knew about it - the/a basics).
  • Most people apply for one specific job at each place.

I would remove one of your qualifiers:
"They gave me a job but with a two-month probation period." Or "They gave me a job, with a two-month probation period though."

and smooth out "but put on":
"They gave me a job, but they put me on a two-month probation per
