On points, boxing term??

Former prime minister Brian Mulroney testifies at the Oliphant inquiry into his relationship with Karlheinz Schreiber. If the inquiry into Brian Mulroney's business dealings with Karlheinz Schreiber were a boxing match, the former prime minister may well have left the ring even on points with the Oliphant commission's counsel, Richard Wolson, yesterday. But this contest will ultimately be decided by the Canadian public, most of whom are not watching every jab, clinch and feint.

What does on points mean in this context? It's not an idiom, is it? I guess it's a boxing terminology.

From the point of view off most Canadians, Mulroney has already lost on points. He has no credibility at all. That's my opinion.

Best wishes, Clive
