I would use: On a personal level my wife and mother-in-law have resigned to avoid(any) potential conflict(s) of interest. But I don't see the necessity for the phrase personal level . What's the problem with: My wife and mother-in-law have resigned to avoid(any) potential conflict(s) of interest between them.

I would use:

On a personal level my wife and mother-in-law have resigned to avoid(any) potential conflict(s) of interest.

But I don't see the necessity for the phrase personal level.

I totally agree with you. I feel the same way and urge everyone to do the same. I'm embarassed that I still sometimes forget to provide the full context or think that the context is sufficient.
