On Or Onto

Hello everyone,

Is either "on" or "onto" okay in the following sentences?

1. It took days to load all the treasure on the Hispaniola.

2. It tool days to load all the treasure onto the Hispsnola.

PS. The Hispaniola means "the ship" in Treasure Island story

Regards,

JA
