I have a question.Which one is right On or Onto in this sentence?

The astronaut stepped on/onto the Moon.

If the astronaut has just gotten out of the spacecraft walking in the direction of moon, you should say

stepped onto the moon. If the astronaut is already on the moon, you should say stepped on the moon.
