Hi Sunsail

What if the reference is to both software and a PC? As an IT person, would you say "I installed the software in the computer" or would you say "I installed the software on the computer"?
(I would choose on.)

Hello,
Maybe I could not explain briefly, I said exactly what you say.Combination of software + pc hardrware needs "on". Like

I say "on"...
Files or software on your computer... on your sever... on your cell phone... on your mp3 player.

And "in" for applications:
Options in Internet Explorer, tools in Firefox, etc.

But there isn't always a clear cut distinction. You might hear that something looks good "in" Windows (environment), but that an application doesn't run "on" Windows (platform).
