On or in

Hi,

I have a question regarding prepositions. Should it be "on" or "in" in the following sentence and why:

The student has before the start of the study programme, and no later than two weeks before the start of the semester, notified the university that he or she does not want his or her place on/in the study programme in question.

I would like to use the preposition "on" but I do not know if it is right and I cannot explain why.

Would be very much obliged if you could help me.

Best regards,

Veronika
