ON OR IN

Hi,
Do you some tips that will help me to distiguish situations where the word "in" would be correct and where "on" would be correct in situations like these?

Do the items I mentioned in (on??) this month's agenda?
Can I find our names in (on??) the computer program?

I think we use the word "on" when some action is involved with the agenda or program like this: "Please put our names on the agenda."

The concrete meanings are that on applies to two-dimensional surfaces and in applies to 3-dimensional containers. Metaphorical uses of the two prepositions usually conceptually follow these guidelines... but not necessarily.

  • -- an agenda is usually thought of as a 2-dimensional sheet of paper (but that does not make ' in ' completely wrong.

Thank you. I think you meant to write the word "in" instead of the word "on" as you have here. Right? I am referring to your "on" in your response part.

Can I find our names on the computer program?-- Names inside programs? Not likely. But you might have written the program, so your name (i.e. your mark) would be on it.

No, I meant your name (i.e. your mark) would be on it. Like a signature.
