On its own motion

suo moto means "on its own motion". I wonder what it means.

Though I know "suo moto" means "to act on one's own opinion".

Hi,

It's Latin and it's actually "suo motu", not "suo moto".
For its meaning see Wikipedia's entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suo_motu and the following pages:

Thank you.

But I was not asking for the meaning of "suo motu" but "on its own motion". I'm simply here confused with the use of 'motion" which I so far understand as "movement". Does the motion mean "opinion" here?

I am in no position to tell that, but (simply because I know what suo motu means) I'd go for meaning #2 http://www.me
