On / in the collar

Can I say,

There is / are many stains on the collar (of his shirt).

Top answer

I think "on the collar" is more usual, but you could use both on/in. If the stain is on the surface of the collar, use "on", and if it has soaked into the fabric use "in".

As I picture it, a stain in the collar would be on the inside of the shirt, the part touching the skin. A stain on the collar would be on the part visible to other people.
