Can I say,

The pupils are sitting in / on the crowded bus.

Thanks, but why ? if we say "on the bus", I thought is on top of the bus.

If you are sitting on the car, you are sitting on top of it.

These are pesky prepositions.

in a car

on a train

in an airplane

on a boat

on a bus ('on top of' would put you outside, in a dangerous place)

on a horse

in a wagon

on a bicycle

on foot

I think 'on an airplane' is also correct.
I remember we had a discussion about 'on the bus' and 'in a bus' long ago.
Although 'on a bus' is very commonly used, I believe 'in a bus' is rarely used, but not incorrect.
