I'm watching a show on the Discovery Times channel, "Thomas L. Friedman Reporting" on the topic "The Other Side of Outsourcing." The reporter is visiting Bangalore to see the effects of the outsourcing phenomenon on the people and culture there. It's very fascinating. For example I just saw a segment on how the employees are being taught American accents in order to work call centers.
Let's not get a flamewar about the pros or cons of outsourcing please!
But I would like to ask what you all think the future effects Indian English will have on the world? I work at Oracle with a workforce that is probably 60-70% Indian, and I find myself sometimes adopting some Indian patterns of speech.
For example, I sometimes speak with an Indian sing-song or say things like "Is it" or "Isn't it" to the ends of sentences, where "to be" is not the verb and/or the subject of the sentence is a person, not an "it." All this despite the fact that I'm California born & raised.
If you have digital cable or satellite you should get this channel. If you missed it, it will be aired again in 3 hours (@ 6am PST).
