On a flat note, on a consolidated basis

he markets opened on a flat note with a negative bias after IT major Infosys reported a drop in its first quarter net profit. The BSE Sensex dropped 31 points to 17,905 and the NSE Nifty declined 9 points to 5,373 at 9.15 am.

IT stocks pulled down the benchmark indices after Infosys said that its net profit in the first quarter on a consolidated basis declined 7 per cent to Rs 1,488 crore vs Rs 1,600 crore in the previous quarter. Its revenues were, however, up 4.2 per cent at Rs 6,198 crore vs Rs 5,944 crore in the previous quarter.

The IT index fell 2.19 per cent. Infosys led the declines dropping 2.42 per cent. However, the results had a rub off on other IT stocks too. TCS fell 2.39 per cent and Wipro declined 1.70 per cent.

Please explain to me the highlighted parts.

Thank you Clive.
But the words "negative bias" confuse me. You said "flat note" means the level of price change almost remains same but "negative bias" suggest the market moving is down. I assumed "negative bias" means "marketing is moving downwards".

Yes - the market opened flat, but because of the poor results posted by a company there was a minimal movement downards. This move was not enough to make the market go lower. Hence, the negative bias/trend.

When the market is flat, it doesn't mea
