What does this "on" mean?

Open platforms are no longer allowed on buses.

Is it the same kind as this below, or is it something else?

This is somewhat difficult to answer because I don't know what you mean by an "open platform" in the context of buses; and the second sentence is ungrammatical.

If "open platforms" mean very high-heeled shoes, then it means you can no longer board a bus wearing such shoes. If it means unenclosed passenger compartments on a bus, then it means that buses are no longer allowed to be built w

I took "platforms" as completely different things by mistake, which is why I got confused: they are actually part of buses.

I hadn't considered Anonymous's shoe possibility, but googling reveals that platform shoes (high- or low-heeled) are called such because they have thick soles. A glance will tell you that they are not a particularly dangerous sort of shoe for a bus ride (certainly not as dangerous as spike heels, for instance), so that option is highly unlikely.

Thanks, Mr M. That's a good example of an open-platform bus. All double-decker buses had an open platform at the back when I was young. We didn't call them 'open-platform' buses - we just took it for granted that that was the way buses were. It was great - you could run after a departing bus and have a chance of jumping on. You didn't have to wait for a bus stop to get off - you could jump off any
