Omitted Words

1. It returns a copy of the string, with leading and trailing whitespace (omitted word) omitted. (What would be the omitted word there? Would it be 'that are' or is it 'that is' ? How do you know? I think it is 'that are' because I have 'leading' and 'trailing' ?)

Thanks.

I do not understand what the sentence is talking about, so I cannot know what the missing word is, but if the choice is between 'that are' or 'that is', my guess would be 'that is' because there is nothing to indicate that the sentence is refering to more than one 'trailing whitespace'.

Who said that a word was omitted there? Is this an exercise from a book? If so, it may depend on the subject matter of the chapter in the book where this exercise occurs. Is it a chapter on the "with ... being ..." construction? If so, the textbook writer may want you to answer that "being" is the omitted word.
