Omission of reciprocal pronouns

1. John and Mary admire each other.

2. John and Mary can't stand each other.

3. The men are similar to each other.

It is said In #1,2 and 3 the reciprocal pronouns can't be omitted.

3. The couple resemble each other.

It is said the reciprocal pronouns in #3 can be omitted which I don't understand.

Q1) What do you think?

4. The brother look very similar.

Q2) Can I say The brother are very similar?

Q2) This is another sentence that is incomplete if the reciprocal pronouns are omitted. What are the brothers similar to? You can say "The brothers are very similar in that they both have the same mannerisms (or ?)." Or you can say "The brothers look very similar to each other."
