Omission of Prepositions

"I believe that Japan is a culture which places a lot of value on hard work and that people often work for (not present in the original) very long hours."
"He is done with (not present in the original) reading the book."
I always wonder why people often omit prepositions in their conversationEmotion: thinking.As a non-native speaker, It sounds really odd to me. When can we omit prepositions ,and when not?

Unfortunately, given the idiomatic nature of usages like this, I think this question could only be answered by compiling a huge list of phrases and patterns and checking each one individually. I very much doubt there is any mechanical rule that can be applied.
