Omission of definite article

I read the following excerpt on the Irish times:
"Communication difficulties between couples remains the single biggest problem."

Why can not we use definite article "the" before " communication problems " here?

Would it be ungrammatical if it was used(article)?

Ungrammatical is perhaps too strong a word. It wouldn't be as good English as it is without the article.
