Omission of Article "a" in a sentence

One of my classmates wrote the following sentences:

1) Most people prefer a dog rather than a cat as pet.
2) Most people prefer dog rather than cat as pet.

Are both sentences correct? Or is sentence no. 2 correct even if the article "a" is omitted before the words dog and cat?

I am confused. I would appreciate your immediate response.

Thank you.
