Omission of An Indefinite Article

My book says:

He is not so much scholar as a poet. = He is a poet rather than a scholar. = He is not a scholar so much as a poet.

Is 'He is not so much scholar as a poet' correct? I think this is right. He is not so much a scholar as a poet.
