Sir, what is the difference between "omen" and "augury"? Are omens always unpleasant?

Omens are often unpleasant; at least, the word is used as if they were, but they needn't be. That is why we have the phrase, 'an ill omen'. e.

An augury is similar, but it requires divination, i.e. an intermediary who reads the bones or tea leaves or whatever to interpret the omen; an omen proper appears to your sixth sense directly.
