Older/elder

Hello,I can't figure out difference between these two,which is correct John is elder than Monica or John is older than Monica? Also Mark is the oldest/eldest son in the family?

John is older than Monica. Elder cannot be used as a comparative. This is OK: John is Monica's elder brother .
